One Sweet Little Baby

A choral transformation of Glenn McClure’s and Wes Kennison’s new gospel Christmas song.  The text is based on Simeon’s prophecy for the Holy Child, and foreshadows the momentous and challenging future in store for him and his family.  The arrangement figuratively traces the “journeying” of the Holy Family to Bethlehem as well as their flight to Egypt:

“All for the love of one sweet, little baby, we have come so far.”

In 2004, I met the New York composer/percussionist Glenn McClure when we both participated in the CBS Christmas Eve special “Enter the Light of the Life.”  He shared with me a song that he and Wes Kennison had created for their church called “One Sweet Little Baby” and I felt like I had discovered a new Christmas classic. I was excited to include it in a set of Christmas arrangements I was making for the Juniata College Concert Choir.  In the process of writing the piece, I ended up “journeying” far and wide — traversing key areas far beyond the original D major — in a reflection of the long distances traveled by the Holy Family.
