Great is Thy Faithfulness

$2.00

A completely new setting of the traditional hymn text to the tune STAR IN THE EAST.  A unison opening verse followed by a straight-forward four-part harmonization of the chorus establishes the basic structure of the piece.  Thereafter, successive verses utilize canon and mirrored counterpoint to great effect, eventually culminating in a climactic a cappella chorus.  A quick, banjo-inspired piano accompaniment provides excitement throughout, while the sturdy, rustic tune gives a palpable sense of strength and “faithfulness.”  A very enjoyable sing for the choir.  With optional fiddle and string bass, or full string ensemble.

This score has optional musical accompaniment available (Solo Violin, Violin I & II, Viola, Cello, String Bass). To get these parts, contact skpublishinginfo@gmail.com

Description

Background

This version of “Great is Thy Faithfulness” was created so that the music of “Brightest and Best” could be enjoyed with other-than-Epiphany text.  I looked for a while to find a suitable text, and was delighted to discover that the words of “Great is thy Faithfulness” — always linked to a 3/4 meter — fit this duple meter tune perfectly.  Like the original “Brightest and Best” words by Reginald Heber that flow with such richness, this text offers a similar flow of vivid imagery. My church choir has often sung this piece for Thanksgiving Sunday, but it fits well thoughout the year, and is also at home on programs featuring Americana.
