Courage to Care

$2.00

An empowering eco-anthem for SATB choir and piano. Because the climate challenge can feel so overwhelming and paralyzing, Courage to Care is intentionally structured to encourage participation. Singers can contribute their own climate action ideas to the lyrics, and the audience can “echo” many phrases throughout. The song builds to an inspiring vision of what the success of our global cooperation will look like and feel like: “Blue skies, true skies, clearer-than-we’ve-seen skies…easiest we’ve breathed in centuries….”

Description

Background
Courage to Care is dedicated to Dr. Lucy Jones, founder of Tempo: Music for Climate Action, and was commissioned by Dr. Kirsten Hedegaard, founder of Chicago’s EcoVoice Project.  Its premiere performance was at the December 2022 American Geophysical Union Annual Meeting in Chicago, led by Dr. Hedegaard and her New Earth Ensemble, with Shawn at the piano.
Lyrics (condensed):
When the stats are grim, it takes courage to care…
When the odds are slim, it takes courage to care…
At the midnight hour, it takes courage to care…
When you doubt your power, it takes courage to care…
But every minute counts, every action counts;
together we amount to millions:
Every trip we’re sparing, every ride we’re sharing
Every tree left standing, every change demanding…

When the trouble’s deep, it takes courage to care,
When the way is steep, it takes courage to care…
But every step adds up, every step adds up,
Together we can climb this mountain.
If we want to break her fever
Turn the doubter to believer
So we can make it to the top in time
To give the children a sunrise.
Blue skies, true skies, clearer-than-we’ve-seen skies,
Clearer than we’ve seen in centuries…
Easiest we’ve breathed in centuries…
(Singers’ own action ideas complete the lyrics:)
Every garden tending, every way we’re mending
Every tree that’s planted, every outrage ranted
Many habits changing, systems rearranging…
