Background
During the year I spent in Massachusetts as a volunteer, I became acquainted with the work of Rudolf Steiner (who is more widely known for his development of Waldorf education). His esoteric understandings of Christianity include what he calls the Mystery of Golgotha. I was intrigued by his “numinous” sense of the Crucifixion, which inspired me to write this chant for Good Friday.
O what love was borne for thee, on that thorny tree.
Ah, Golgotha….
O what wealth has come to earth, in that richest birth.
Ah, Golgotha…
O that death has lost its power, in that living hour.
