A jubilant rendition of the Christmas spiritual, including portions where the audience/congregation may sing along with the choir. Verses for T/B and S/A alternate with four-part refrains, while the piano provides a brightly rhythmic jazz-inflected accompaniment. Great closer.
The piece lends itself to jazz improvisation on a variety of accompanying instruments — saxophone, flute, trombone, etc. Written-out parts are available for string bass and flute. Also there is a “deluxe” version scored for advanced soprano saxophone soloist, string bass, SATB choir, and piano.

My students at the University of La Verne got to experience my early efforts in choral arranging! This setting was one I made for a holiday concert in December 2000. The arrangement was later included in the CBS Christmas Eve special “Enter the Light of Life” as well as the Juniata College Concert Choir “Velvet Light” Christmas CD.
