Sunday, June 8th, 2014 at 7 pm at LA's Disney Concert Hall

The Los Angeles Master Chorale presents "Today, Tomorrow, and Beyond" a program of LAMC-commissioned pieces in the final concert of the celebratory 50th anniversary season of the Chorale. Kirchner's "Inscapes" -- a Beethoven-inspired choral cycle on the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins -- is featured along with Esa-Pekka Salonen's "Iri da iri," David Lang's "the national anthems," Francisco Nunez's "Es tu tiempo" and Gabriela Lena Frank's "Los Cantores de las Montanas." The concert also features guest artists Huayucaltia and the Calder Quartet. Grant Gershon and Lesley Leighton, conducting.

OutWest presents "Beyond Brokeback," a staged reading by Gregory Hinton of online postings to the Ultimate Brokeback Forum, a website that captured popular interest in the wake of the film "Brokeback Mountain." Shawn Kirchner's songs from his album "Meet Me on the Mountain" are incorporated into the reading. Readers are: Marlene Head of the Autry National Center, local actor/musician Michael Butler Murray, Los Angeles Master Chorale singer Alice Kirwan Murray, independent documentary filmmaker Lydia Nibley (Two Spirits), USC professor and author Bill Handley, and Kirchner.

The American Choral Director's Association national convention presents the Luther College men's choir, the Norseman, and conductor Tim Peter, in concert session #1. Among their program's featured works is Shawn Kirchner's arrangement for men's chorus of the Kenyan song "Wana Baraka." It is the first time a Kirchner choral piece has been on the program at a national ACDA convention.

The Los Angeles Master Chorale presents "Stories from Korea" highlighting the robust contemporary choral tradition in Korea as well as a newly commissioned work, Mugunghwa: Rose of Sharon -- the latest in the Master Chorale's "LA is the World" series -- by American composer Mark Grey, featuring Korean violinist, Jennifer Koh. Grey's piece features a libretto drawn from letters of a Korean family separated by the division between North and South Korea. Grant Gershon conducting.

OutWest and the Autry Museum presents a commemoration the 5th anniversary of the ground-breaking film "Brokeback Mountain." Events include a morning screening of the film in cooperation with Focus Features and an afternoon staged reading by Greg Hinton of excerpts from the book "Beyond Brokeback," a compilation of responses to the film posted by members of the Ultimate Brokeback Forum, an online community that formed in the wake of powerful reactions to the film. The reading will also include two of Shawn Kirchner's songs from the "Meet Me on the Mountain" album, featuring Ryan Harrison and Marlene Head as lead vocalists, Mike Murray on vocals and guitar, and Lydia Nibley on vocals.
